About Jaza
Jaza is focused on expanding access to clean energy across underserved communities in Sub-Saharan Africa through solar-powered hubs and community-based operations.
Jaza Energy is a company dedicated to providing clean and affordable electricity to rural communities in Tanzania and Nigeria through solar-powered energy hubs. These hubs offer a sustainable alternative to traditional energy sources like kerosene and diesel, which are commonly used for lighting and powering generators.
The company's innovative model involves setting up solar-powered charging stations, known as "hubs," in remote areas. Each hub is operated by local women, referred to as "Jaza Stars," who manage the distribution of portable lithium-ion battery packs to households. These battery packs can power various household devices, including lights, mobile phones, and small appliances. Customers rent these packs and exchange them for fully charged units at the hubs, ensuring a continuous and reliable energy supply.
]Since its inception, Jaza Energy has made significant strides in expanding its operations. By 2021, the company had deployed 63 hubs across three regions in Tanzania—Pemba, Kigoma, and Mtwara—providing electricity to approximately 51,000 people. The hubs are entirely managed by women from the local communities, empowering them and fostering economic growth.
Jaza Energy's approach has garnered recognition for its impact and innovation. In 2021, the company was awarded the Scale Up Project of the Year by EEP Africa for its battery rental service and network of women-operated solar energy hubs in Tanzania.
Through its commitment to renewable energy and community empowerment, Jaza Energy is playing a pivotal role in addressing energy access challenges in rural Africa.
