Overview
NECTA is the government institution in Tanzania responsible for designing, administering and certifying national examinations and assessments. It was established under Parliamentary Act No. 21 of 1973, after mainland Tanzania withdrew from the former joint East African examination arrangement.
NECTA administers a full range of national assessments for primary, secondary, and teacher-training levels: from primary school leaving exams, through lower and upper secondary examinations, to a variety of diploma and teacher-certification tests. It sets the examination policies, defines subject syllabi for testing, organizes exam centres, appoints examiners, oversees marking and moderation, and issues official certificates or diplomas to successful candidates.
