Overview

The Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) is a government‑agency in Tanzania established under the Water Supply and Sanitation Act No. 5 of 2019 (effective 1 July 2019). RUWASA is mandated to plan, design, construct, supervise, monitor and ensure the sustainable operation of water supply and sanitation services in rural areas across Tanzania.

It oversees matters such as groundwater exploration and drilling, development of dams and infrastructures for rural water supply, promotion of hygiene and sanitation practices in rural communities, and capacity‑building of community‑based water supply organisations (CBWSOs) for local ownership and maintenance of services.
