Overview
Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) is a Tanzanian government parastatal organisation tasked with the management, conservation and sustainable use of the country’s national parks, which represent the highest category of protected areas under Tanzanian law.
Established originally under the Tanganyika National Parks Ordinance of 1959, TANAPA now operates under the National Parks Act (Chapter 282 of the 2002 laws) and oversees over 20 national parks across varied ecosystems in Tanzania.
Its responsibilities include conserving wildlife and natural habitats, developing and maintaining park infrastructure and visitor services, promoting eco-tourism, protecting biodiversity, engaging local communities in conservation efforts, and raising revenue (in large part through tourism) to fund its operations.
