Job Summary

To drive the growth and profitability of the Agribusiness Retail portfolio by providing strategic leadership in the implementation of the Bank's agribusiness objectives. The role is responsible for developing and executing business growth strategies, fostering strong stakeholder relationships, and ensuring effective portfolio management while maintaining high standards of governance and risk management. Additionally, the role creates a motivating and high-performance work environment that enables the team to deliver exceptional agribusiness solutions and services to retail clients, thereby contributing to sustainable business growth and profitability.

Job Description​

Key Accountabilities

Portfolio Growth & Management (40%)

  • Drive sustainable growth of the Agri Retail portfolio while ensuring profitability, diversification, and market penetration.
  • Deliver all commercial activities of the Agri Retail business, including timely processing, approval, and disbursement of loan facilities in line with agricultural production cycles.
  • Monitor portfolio performance and coordinate with Cluster Heads to ensure business targets are achieved in accordance with approved budgets.
  • Prepare growth plans and budgets for the Agribusiness Retail Unit and coordinate implementation to achieve agreed targets.
  • Review credit appraisals submitted by Relationship Managers and Business Development Officers and provide technical guidance on appropriate credit structures.
  • Present and defend credit applications before Credit team and relevant approval authorities.
  • Drive portfolio expansion while ensuring effective monitoring, risk management, and sustainable portfolio quality

Strategic Leadership (40%)

  • Formulate and implement the Agri Retail strategy to ensure business objectives are achieved and performance is enhanced on a quarterly and annual basis.
  • Identify opportunities across the agricultural value chain for portfolio growth, cross-selling, and development of innovative solutions.
  • Provide strategic direction to team members on key priorities, ensuring alignment, understanding, and commitment to business objectives.
  • Benchmark departmental productivity against industry standards and implement initiatives to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Agree on performance targets and take overall accountability for the achievement of Agri Retail business objectives.
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with government institutions, guarantors, donors, development partners, and other stakeholders to enhance financial inclusion and agricultural sector growth.
  • Collaborate with Business, Product Development, and other internal stakeholders to design and roll out new agricultural products and solutions.
  • Foster teamwork and collaboration across business units to ensure seamless delivery of agricultural value chain solutions.

Governance & Quality (20%)

  • Ensure compliance with credit policies, regulatory requirements, internal controls, and governance standards.
  • Maintain high portfolio quality and minimize credit losses through proactive portfolio monitoring and risk mitigation.
  • Coordinate and consolidate reports required by third parties, including guarantors, donors, partners, and other stakeholders, within agreed timelines.
  • Supervise the preparation and review of Management Information System (MIS) reports, identify anomalies, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of Agribusiness Retail performance to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Monitor adherence to approved credit processes and procedures to support sound risk management and portfolio sustainability.

2.0 Education and Experience Required

  • Holder of a first degree or its equivalent in Agricultural Economics & Agribusiness, Business Administration, Banking and Finance or its equivalent.
  • Master’s degree in Agriculture is an added advantage     
  • Minimum 5 years of having worked in Agribusiness sector
  • Minimum 4 years of credit appraisals
  • Minimum of 3 years in a Managerial position

3.0 Additional   Skills:  

  • Sound knowledge of Agribusiness Value Chains.
  • Sound Credit knowledge as well as bank's products and services including agribusiness products. 
  • Business environment awareness.
  • Risk Management skills.

  • Ability to organize and manage stakeholders’ engagements.

Special work requirements:

  • Strong knowledge of the agribusiness sector, agricultural value chains, and government policies, regulations, and initiatives related to agricultural development and financing.
  • Sound understanding of regulatory requirements, including Bank of Tanzania (BoT) regulations, as well as the Bank's internal policies, procedures, and risk management frameworks.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practical experience in structuring and managing structured financing solutions, including value chain financing, contract farming arrangements, warehouse receipt financing, and other agricultural financing structures.

Office Based role

  • Periodically review and analyze the performance of the Retail Agribusiness portfolio and recommend corrective actions and improvement strategies to enhance growth, profitability, and portfolio quality.
  • Review and appraise Agribusiness credit applications, providing recommendations for approval or rejection in line with the Bank's credit policies, risk appetite, and regulatory requirements.
  •  Prepare and present portfolio performance reports, including analysis of portfolio size, quality, growth trends, risk indicators, and overall business performance to support informed decision-making.
