Job Description
The Lake Victoria Drowning Prevention project (LVDPP) is seeking a consultant to conduct an accessibility study to identify ways in which the project could become more inclusive, especially of people with disabilities (PWDs).
BACKGROUND
Lake Victoria Drowning Prevention Project is a project implemented by EMEDO and funded by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).The project aims to address drowning risks for seven fishing communities in Mara,Mwanza and Kagera region. Water safety and drowning prevention is important for all persons who live near the lake and LVDPP is concerned to better understanding of the scale of disabilities in the project communities, the possible barriers to PWDs participating in the project activities and ways in which the project could be more inclusive of PWDs.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
This is a gap analysis to identify the current position in relation to PWDs in project communities, identify barriers to their participation in LVDPP interventions, and make recommendations for making the project programming more inclusive.
CONSULTANT QUALIFICATIONS
EMEDO is looking for experienced consultant on the related opportunity that should have the following background and skills
- Demonstrable expertise in disability inclusion research, with particular focus on accessibility assessments
- Strong understanding of gender and disability intersectionality
- Previous experience working with fishing communities or rural communities in East Africa
- Proficiency in Swahili and English (both written and spoken)
- Experience in qualitative research methods, particularly participatory approaches
- Knowledge of local disability rights frameworks in Tanzania
- Proven ability to produce high-quality, accessible research reports
- Worked Donor funded projects under international and local NGOs
TIMING
The actual work is expected to begin in September 2025. The fieldwork will take approximately two to three weeks as the study shall entail a significant amount of travel to project communities, some of which are located on islands in the Lake.
