Overview
Empowering Minds – Transforming Lives
We are a Tanzanian-grown non-profit organisation transforming the education landscape in rural communities across Tanzania.
Our mission is to improve educational opportunities and by doing so instil lasting positive change, fostering a culture where education becomes the cornerstone of progress for generations to come.
The Challenge
In Tanzania there are nearly 17,000 primary schools; far more than can be adequately funded and resourced. Geographical isolation, funding shortfalls and teaching provision severely impact the quality of rural education and student outcomes.
For students enrolled in primary school, challenges such as inadequately trained or absent teachers, overcrowded classrooms, and insufficient learning resources result in many still being unable to read or write. As a result literacy rates in rural areas drop to around 69% compared to 91% in urban settings
Additionally, children who are not attending school in rural areas face a higher risk of exploitation, child marriage, and reduced earning potential. While opportunities to continue education beyond school are severely lacking.
In a country where employment prospects and livelihoods are already challenged, their chances of breaking free from the cycle of poverty are further limited.
Our Approach
We focus on learners, educators, and supportive learning environments. Everything we do is designed to tackle the challenges that limit a student’s capacity to learn, an educator’s ability to teach effectively, and a community’s awareness of how education can lift lives out of the cycle of poverty.
Our programs are rooted locally and operated with a pragmatic, results-oriented ethos that treats rural communities and individuals as partners and co-investors in the mission to improve education.
Responsibility for funding education services in rural areas is often borne by community-led organisations struggling to fill the gaps. To solve these challenges, we collaborate with community councils and local schools, plus Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) that use income from conservation efforts to tackle community issues.
By collaboratively investing in education, these organisations aim to improve literacy levels and livelihoods in their communities.
Where We Work
Originally operating in 7 primary schools in Northern Tanzania, since 2023 we have broadened our reach to Southern Tanzania supporting a total of 54 schools. All of the rural areas we focus on are particularly rich in natural resources with most falling within Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs).
Our primary school support and scholarship programs benefit nearly 25,000 school students and youth annually.
