Overview
Mafia District Council administers the Mafia Archipelago in Tanzania’s Pwani Region, overseeing Mafia Island and its surrounding isles such as Jibondo, Juani, Chole, Bwejuu, and others. Established in 1959, the district spans approximately 972 km², of which 407 km² is land and 565 km² is ocean. The administrative capital is Kilindoni, the largest settlement on the island. As of the 2022 census, Mafia District had a population of 66,180, up from 46,438 in 2012.
