Job Summary
The role is responsible for reviewing, challenging, and approving credit applications within a delegated lending mandate.
The role ensures independent, high-quality credit decisions, balancing business growth with prudent risk management.
The incumbent provides oversight on credit assessments prepared by analysts, ensures adherence to policies, and acts as a final control point for credit risk acceptance.
Job Description
Credit Approval & Risk Decisioning (60%)
- Review, evaluate, and approve or decline credit applications within delegated lending authority limits.
- Critically assess credit proposals submitted by Credit Analysts, ensuring: Accuracy and completeness of credit assessments. Sound financial analysis and risk evaluation. Full compliance with applicable credit policies and procedures.
- Exercise independent judgment and apply credit expertise when sanctioning credit facilities.
- Identify key risks, mitigating factors, and conditions precedent to approval.
- Ensure all credit decisions align with: Retail Credit Policy. Approved risk appetite framework. Regulatory and statutory requirements.
- Escalate applications exceeding delegated authority to the appropriate approval level.
- Return or decline deficient applications with clear rationale and actionable feedback.
- Monitor portfolio concentration risks, industry exposures, and emerging portfolio trends.
- Enforce strict controls to prevent fraud, misrepresentation, and policy breaches.
- Validate that: Suspended branches and restricted customers are not processed. Employer confirmations, customer verification, and due diligence requirements have been satisfactorily completed.
- Participate in Credit Committees and other approval forums, where required.
Oversight of Credit Assessment Process (10%)
- Provide guidance, coaching, and constructive challenge to Credit Analysts on complex and high-risk applications.
- Ensure consistency, quality, and adherence to credit underwriting standards across all assessments.
- Support the continuous enhancement of credit assessment methodologies, tools, and processes.
- Review structured lending and secured credit proposals to ensure robustness and appropriateness of risk mitigants.
Loan Structuring & Conditions Management (10%)
- Determine appropriate facility structures, repayment terms, pricing recommendations (where applicable), and risk mitigation requirements.
- Ensure collateral and security arrangements are adequate, enforceable, and aligned to approved credit policies.
- Define and approve conditions relating to: Collateral perfection and registration. Legal documentation and compliance requirements. Insurance coverage, valuations, and other security-related obligations.
- Ensure all conditions precedent are fulfilled before facility disbursement.
Stakeholder Engagement (5%)
- Collaborate effectively with key internal stakeholders, including: Legal Department. Treasury. Security Management Unit. Branch Network and Business Units.
- Ensure alignment on facility structuring, collateral requirements, documentation, and disbursement readiness.
- Provide timely, clear, and constructive feedback on credit decisions to support service delivery and turnaround times.
Portfolio Risk Monitoring & Governance (10%)
- Monitor the performance of approved credit facilities and identify emerging risks within the portfolio.
- Support portfolio reviews, risk remediation initiatives, and early warning strategies.
- Contribute to: Credit policy development and periodic reviews. Risk appetite assessment and calibration. Enhancement of credit governance frameworks and controls.
- Recommend actions to strengthen portfolio quality and manage risk exposure.
Compliance & Regulatory Adherence (5%)
- Ensure all credit decisions and approvals comply with: Internal credit policies and procedures. Regulatory requirements and industry standards.
- Remain current with regulatory developments, policy updates, and best practices in credit risk management.
- Support internal and external audit activities and ensure timely closure of audit findings.
- Maintain comprehensive and accurate approval records to support auditability and decision transparency.
Education & Experience
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or Advanced Diploma in Finance, Banking, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field.
Experience
- Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience in Credit Risk, Credit Underwriting, Lending Operations, Banking, or a related financial services environment.
