Girls First Initiative is a non-governmental organization committed to advancing the rights, voices, and leadership of girls and young women. Our work focuses on empowering girls through advocacy, education, community engagement, and storytelling that challenges harmful social norms and promotes gender equality.

Our organization operates across three core focus areas: access to quality education, promotion of comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services, and economic growth and empowerment. Over the past five years, Girls First Initiative has directly impacted more than 10,000 beneficiaries, implementing programs across five regions in Tanzania.

Our mission is to create a society where young women are free from violence, have access to essential health services, and receive the education and skills needed to achieve sustainable livelihoods and long-term independence.

POSITION SUMMARY

Girls First Initiative is seeking a creative, proactive, and mission-driven Communication Officer to lead and strengthen our internal and external communications. The Communication Officer will play a key role in shaping our public image, amplifying our impact, and ensuring our programs and advocacy efforts are effectively communicated to diverse audiences.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement communication strategies aligned with the organization’s mission and goals.
  • Create engaging content for social media platforms, website, newsletters, reports, and campaigns.
  • Manage and grow the organization’s digital presence (social media, website updates, online campaigns).
  • Document programs, events, and success stories through written content, photos, and videos.
  • Support advocacy and fundraising efforts through compelling storytelling.
  • Ensure consistent branding and messaging across all communication materials.
  • Work closely with program teams to translate activities into clear, impactful communication outputs.
  • Manage media relations, including press releases and media outreach where necessary.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Development Studies, or a related field (relevant experience is highly valued; candidates with strong practical experience are encouraged to apply regardless of academic background).

  • Proven experience in communications, media, or content creation; experience working with NGOs is an added advantage.
  • Excellent writing, editing, copywriting, and storytelling skills.
  • Demonstrated experience managing social media platforms and implementing digital communication campaigns.
  • Experience designing organizational branding and communication materials.
  • Proficiency in graphic design and multimedia tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut, and other graphic or video editing software is an added advantage.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with a high level of attention to detail; creative, proactive, and solution-oriented.
  • Strong commitment to girls’ rights, gender equality, and social justice.
