Job Description
Her Initiative is a young women-led nonprofit organization based in Tanzania, working to break the cycle of poverty by equipping adolescent girls and young women with economic resilience and digital empowerment. Through storytelling, innovation, and advocacy, we amplify the voices and agency of girls and young women across Africa.
Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated and creative Communications Intern who is passionate about storytelling, digital content, and youth engagement. The intern will support the Communications team in content creation, social media management, and media relations, playing an important role in strengthening Her Initiative’s visibility and impact.
This internship is ideal for someone looking to grow their skills in a fast-paced, youth-driven nonprofit environment while contributing to gender and economic empowerment in Africa.
Key Responsibilities
Content Creation & Digital Engagement
- Support the development of engaging, youth-friendly content for social media, blogs, newsletters, and campaigns.
- Assist in creating a monthly communications calendar and ensuring consistent posting across platforms.
- Collaborate with program teams to gather content ideas, success stories, and visuals.
- Design basic visual content (e.g., posters, carousels, infographics) using tools like Canva, Adobe or CapCut.
Social Media Management
- Post content across Her Initiative’s platforms (Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Facebook).
- Monitor engagement and assist in responding to comments and messages.
- Participate in brainstorming and executing youth-focused digital campaigns.
Storytelling & Field Engagement
- Participate in at least one field visit per month to collect stories, photos, and videos.
- Assist in drafting impact stories, quotes, and highlights from beneficiaries.
- Help maintain a well-organized digital media library.
Media Relations
- Support the development and maintenance of a media contact list.
- Assist in drafting press releases and pitching stories to media outlets.
- Help coordinate journalist engagement sessions or events.
Website & Analytics
- Assist in updating the Her Initiative website with stories, photos, and blogs.
- Monitor website traffic and social media analytics and provide basic reports.
Internal Communication & Support
- Support the Executive Director and team with materials such as presentations and reports.
- Ensure brand consistency across communication outputs.
Project Support
- Assist the team with day-to-day communication tasks under the Panda Digital project.
- Support the production and uploading of content for the Panda Digital platform.
Key Learning Outcomes (KPIs)
Weekly
- Publish 3–5 pieces of content on social media.
- Draft 1 story, quote, or highlight.
- Support in one departmental check-in or communications update.
- Monitor website or social analytics and submit brief insights.
Monthly
- Contribute to a monthly content calendar.
- Participate in one field visit or project session.
- Draft one blog or visual story.
- Support creation of one promotional or branded material.
- Assist in preparing at least one media or partner communication.
Quarterly
- Support production of a mini-report or content recap.
- Help plan or organize a communications or media engagement activity.
- Contribute to drafting a newsletter or donor update.
Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field (ongoing studies welcome).
- Demonstrated interest in digital content, youth storytelling, or social media.
- Basic skills in tools like Canva, CapCut, or Adobe Spark.
- Strong writing and editing skills with attention to tone and clarity.
- Eagerness to learn, take initiative, and work in a collaborative team.
- Passion for gender equality, youth development, and social change.
