PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

As Senior Content Producer, you will deliver high-quality, accurate and engaging journalism with a digital-first mindset, prioritising video and visual storytelling to reach audiences on mobile and social platforms.

You will originate, film, produce and present content that is clear, relevant and compelling, helping to grow and engage younger, digitally native audiences.

This integrated approach enables us to respond more effectively to audience needs, pursue ambitious storytelling, and strengthen our impact across platforms.

As part of this strategy, we are realigning our footprint in eastern Africa to areas with the greatest potential for audience growth and engagement. The Senior Digital Content Producer role is critical to this ambition, producing distinctive visual journalism through filming, reporting, editing, and producing high-quality digital content. The successful candidate will play a key role in expanding our reach, deepening audience connection, and delivering innovative storytelling that differentiates the BBC in a highly competitive digital landscape.

Your Key Responsibilities And Impact

• Drive originality in video storytelling, identifying under-reported stories, emerging trends and fresh angles that differentiate BBC output in a crowded digital space.
• Support coverage of major news and special events, contributing to planned output while remaining agile and responsive to breaking developments and shifting priorities.
• Exercise strong editorial independence on assignment, making informed decisions about story direction, treatment and prioritisation under minimal supervision.
• Anticipate platform needs during production, capturing multiple formats, framings and shot variations to maximise reuse across platforms.
• Contribute to innovation in formats, testing new video styles, storytelling approaches and audience engagement techniques suited to evolving platform trends.
• Apply risk awareness in editorial decisions, particularly when working in sensitive environments or handling vulnerable contributors.
• Maintain consistency of tone and quality across outputs, ensuring all video content reflects BBC values and editorial expectations, regardless of speed or format.
• Champion efficiency in field and edit workflows, making smart decisions about shooting, scripting and turnaround to maximise output without compromising quality.
• Represent the BBC externally, maintaining professionalism and credibility when dealing with contributors, partners and audiences.
  

Essential Criteria

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• Demonstrable ability to shoot and edit video content, with a strong sense of visual storytelling.
• Proven video editing skills using tools such as Final Cut Pro (FCPx) and QEdit, with the ability to deliver polished, platform-ready content.
• Strong understanding of digital platforms and audience engagement, particularly among younger audiences.
• Excellent scriptwriting and storytelling skills, with the ability to simplify complex issues.
• Strong visual judgement, with the ability to instinctively recognise what will translate into compelling, scroll-stopping video content.
• Advanced story structuring skills, particularly in crafting narratives that sustain attention in the first 3–10 seconds and maintain audience retention.
• Understanding of multi-format capture techniques, including vertical, square and horizontal framing to maximise platform flexibility.
• Knowledge of rights management and content compliance, including copyright, permissions and safe use of third-party visuals in digital video.
• Awareness of safety, risk and ethical considerations in field reporting, especially in sensitive environments or when working with vulnerable contributors.
• Ability to work autonomously in fast-moving environments, making sound editorial and production decisions without immediate supervision.
  

Desirable

• Basic knowledge of motion graphics and visual enhancement techniques, to elevate storytelling without heavy reliance on specialist teams.
• Strong planning and logistical coordination skills, including managing shoots, locations, contributors and turnaround timelines efficiently.
• Cultural awareness and sensitivity, ensuring coverage is respectful, inclusive and avoids misrepresentation across diverse communities.
• Resilience and adaptability, maintaining performance and editorial standards in unpredictable or high-pressure reporting situations.
• Understanding of workflow efficiency and content turnaround optimisation, balancing speed with quality in production cycles.
