Job Description

The Driver is responsible for providing reliable and safe driving services to Water For People staff and visitors while ensuring the highest standards of discretion and integrity, sense of responsibility, excellent knowledge of protocol and security issues. The Driver also demonstrates a client – oriented approach, courtesy, confidentiality, tact and ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds. Additionally, they drive the office vehicle for transporting authorized personnel and delivery/collection of mail, documents, and other items for the Water For People project offices.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

  • Ensure provision of reliable and safe driving for Water For People staff, officials and visitors and safe delivery and collection of mail, documents, and any other cargo.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records on trip sheets, vehicle maintenance, fuel purchases, incident reports, accident reports, vehicle condition reports and other records as required
  • Ensure all road taxes, insurance and road worthiness documents are current and displayed as appropriate
  • Ensure that the vehicle is kept clean and tidy.
  • Carry out weekly maintenance checks on the vehicle and provide reports.
  • Comply fully with procedures on the reporting of accidents involving Water For People vehicles, including reporting any damages, mechanical faults or accidents that may occur.
  • Ensure that the vehicle is always parked safely.
  • Ensure availability of all required documents for the vehicle including, vehicle insurance, vehicle registration, vehicle logs, emergency phone contacts, Security Standard Operating procedures, first aid kit and necessary spare parts in the assigned vehicle.
  • Perform any other tasks as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • A minimum of seven years of experience as a driver required
  • Valid Driving License Class and Certification from NIT (National Institute of Transportation) required
  • High school diploma required
  • Excellent driving record is required
  • English language fluency required
  • Recent eye test certificate - no more than 3 months old required
  • Experience working in the INGO sector is highly preferred
  • Experience with driving through the remote parts of the country
  • Good judgment in traffic and knowledge of traffic patterns
  • Good knowledge about car mechanics
  • Ability to be highly dependable and work with limited supervision
  • Computer skills is a plus
  • Qualification in vehicle maintenance and repairs is an added advantage

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This position will be required to drive within the city, communities in the surrounding area, and anywhere else in Tanzania as and when necessary.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds to change tires and service vehicles.
  • Ability to take regular and extensive travel and work irregular shifts and on public holidays as needed.
