Estates Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)  

Main purpose of job

To manage a portfolio of around 30 residential houses for UK diplomatic staff in Tanzania and the Official residence of the British High Commission. Ensure all UK staff are housed in safe and secure accommodation in line with UK Government policy. Lead on relationships with property owners, negotiate rent and lease agreements. Oversight of the British High Commission estates, technical works and residence teams.

Roles and responsibilities  

This is an exciting and stretching leadership role within the British High Commission, sitting at the heart of our corporate services section.  The role will require energy, proactivity and dedication – as well as creativity and an ability to think on their feet.  The successful job holder will need to be a self-starter who is able to manage their time effectively, take well judged decisions and lead a team of skilled technicians effectively.

The Estates Manager oversees a team of more than 25 staff with different skill sets; they will have a role in representing the team in various committees and with Leadership. They will need to ensure staff are properly equipped to perform their duties, oversee their performance and development plans, support them by reviewing their performances as well as manage underperformance.  They need to have an ability to work in a dynamic environment, make decisions on fair and inclusive basis, be proactive and self-starting and creative in finding solutions to problems.

The Estates Manager oversees the estates maintenance budget, which involves budget planning, execution and reporting. It will require prior experience in forecasting, spending and reporting on project development to the finance team. 

They will have to ensure proper upkeep of the Mission estates including but not limited to Utility, general maintenance, material procurement and safety working in collaboration with the Security team.

As the estates overseer the successful candidate must be able to identify suitable accommodation for British Staff members, negotiate rents on behalf of BHC considering Value for money, and identify quality accommodation in line with Government Policies and advice on house availability and allocation.  They also act as secretary to the Post Housing Committee, a committee that oversees health and safe house allocation at the Mission. 

They will also oversee the annual maintenance and preventive measures plan in place and coordinate with the Technical Works team to ensure required measures are taken for the upkeep of estates.  They will manage estates project in collaboration with headquarters and regional estates teams.

  • 20 country-based staff
  • Estates budget around £300,000

Essential qualifications, skills and experience  

  • 10 years experience of property management  
  • Experience of managing a team of 10 or more people
  • Experience of budget management over £50,000
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Property management certification

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience  

  • Experience of working with UK Health and Safety requirements
  • You must be able to demonstrate excellent written and spoken English
  • Must be comfortable using Word, Excel, and Outlook.
