Legal Counsel (JL3)
Would you like to be part of a value‑driven, international organization where we support and enable global trade every day?
We are looking for a Legal Counsel to join our Legal team, acting as a key partner across West Africa and supporting our operations in five countries.
Key Responsibilities
Legal & Contracts
- Provide expert legal advisory on local and international laws across Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Gambia, and Liberia.
- Support litigation management, engage external counsel, and ensure cost control.
- Draft and review commercial agreements in alignment with Maersk global standards.
- Oversee legal administration, compliance processes, and due diligence requirements.
- Act as corporate secretarial support for assigned entities.
- Deliver monthly and quarterly litigation reports.
- Advise on regulatory compliance for logistics and shipping operations.
- Facilitate internal legal knowledge‑sharing sessions.
Corporate Affairs
- Drive corporate governance and statutory compliance across all jurisdictions.
- Support stakeholder engagement with regulators, industry bodies, and government agencies.
- Ensure alignment with Maersk’s sustainability and ethical business practices.
Key Performance Indicators
- Effective management of legal spend and recoveries.
- Timely resolution of claims and disputes.
- High‑quality, efficient contract review and risk mitigation.
- Accurate and timely support on board activities and AGMs.
- Promotion of legal awareness and compliance culture.
Qualifications
Who We Are Looking For
- A qualified lawyer called to the Ghanaian Bar (mandatory).
- 3+ years experience providing legal and corporate advisory support, preferably within logistics/shipping.
Competencies & Skills
- Strong communication and stakeholder‑management skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Solutions‑driven mindset with strong commercial awareness.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
- Strong relationship‑building skills across diverse teams.
- Ability to be firm and assertive without creating conflict.
- Proficiency in legal technology and digital tools.
- Understanding of logistics and shipping regulatory environments is an advantage.
