Duties and Responsibilities
Org. Setting and Reporting:
The Registry of the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals ("Mechanism") is offering internships with its Library in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania, from September 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026.
The Mechanism was established by the UN Security Council in 2010 to carry out essential functions of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda ("ICTR") and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia ("ICTY") after their mandates were completed.
The Registry, with branches in Arusha and The Hague, provides administrative, legal, policy, and diplomatic support. Key duties include court support, supervision of sentence enforcement, monitoring of cases in national courts, preservation of archives, victim and witness protection, and assistance to national jurisdictions.
This internship position is in the Library of the Mechanism's Registry in Arusha, under the direct supervision of the Library Assistant. The library holds a wide selection of books on international law, international criminal law, genocide, and human rights. It offers various services, including Online Public Access Catalogues, document delivery via email, and in-person reference and research assistance.

Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Library Assistant, interns will:
- Assist with basic library circulation functions, including retrieving, checking out, discharging, and recalling materials.
- Support the registration and cataloging of new materials in the library management system.
- Assist with assigning classification codes, call numbers, and affixing labels to library materials.
- Provide information to visitors about resources available in the library and through peer libraries.
- Help with library activities like locating online journal articles and responding to reference queries.
- Process information by cataloging and indexing materials and maintaining the library management system.
- Guide library users, provide tours, and respond to information requests.
- Assist in compiling daily news summaries from local, regional, and international media.
- Research, compile, and present basic information for communications products.
- Assist with public relations and protocol services, including preparations for official visits.
- Support the planning and implementation of public relations activities, such as drafting social media messages and researching archival material for outreach.
- Support daily library administration.
Qualifications/special skills
Candidates must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:
- Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a relevant first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level).
- Be enrolled in, or have completed, a relevant graduate school program (Master's degree or higher).
Your degree must be in a relevant field such as library/information science, information management, communications, journalism, or multimedia studies.
No prior work experience is required. However, your training, education, or skills should be beneficial to the United Nations.
Required skills:
- Computer literacy in standard software applications.
- Knowledge of major social media platforms.
Desirable skills:
- Knowledge of photography and/or audio-visual production.
- Knowledge of Library cataloging systems.
Languages
- Fluency in English is required.
- Knowledge of French, Kinyarwanda, or Kiswahili is desirable.
