Job Description
The Head of External Relations plays a pivotal role in ensuring alignment between corporate strategy and operational execution across all port and terminal activities. These individuals lead cross-functional coordination, oversees major corporate initiatives, and supports decision-making processes by ensuring accurate communication, reporting, and collaboration. Will also be responsible for maintaining and strengthening relationships between DP World and key government agencies, regulatory bodies, and customers. The role will involve liaising with government stakeholders to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, addressing customer needs, and facilitating smooth operations at the port. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills, with a deep understanding of port operations and government processes in Tanzania.
Key Accountabilities:
- Act as the primary liaison between DP World and various Port Stakeholders, including the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Tanzania Shipping Agency (TASAC), Ministry of Transport & Communications and other regulatory bodies.
- Ensure compliance with local laws, regulations, and port operations policies by working closely with government officials.
- Facilitate government approvals and permits for port activities, infrastructure development, and expansions.
- Monitor policy changes, regulations, and industry trends to provide timely advice to the management.
- Represent DP World in meetings, conferences, and negotiations with government authorities.
- Build and maintain a strong network with government stakeholders to promote a positive working relationship.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key customers, including shipping companies, freight forwarders, and importers/exporters using the port in collaboration with Head of Commercial.
- Act as a liaison between corporate leadership and terminal operations to align strategic goals with day-to-day activities.
- Support the development and implementation of company-wide initiatives across multiple terminals.
- Ensure that all business units are operating in line with corporate goals, values, and compliance standards.
- Track progress, manage interdependencies, and resolve bottlenecks across terminals.
- Ensure timely execution and reporting of key initiatives.
- Serve as the central point of contact for internal departments and external stakeholders for all terminal-related matters.
- Coordinate with regulatory bodies, port authorities, and external stakeholders as needed.
- Ensure all terminals adhere to corporate governance, risk, and compliance policies.
- Support audits, inspections, and internal reviews.
- Assist in the implementation of corporate risk management strategies within operational units.
- Lead a team of corporate coordinators or analysts, if applicable.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and performance.
- Provide coaching and development for team members.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Public Administration, Logistics, Maritime Studies, or related field (Master’s is added advantage).
Skills and Experience:
- Minimum 10 years of experience in port and terminal operations or logistics.
- Strong interpersonal and networking skills to build and maintain relationships with government bodies, regulatory authorities, and port users.
- Ability to represent the organization professionally in high-level meetings and negotiations.
- Deep understanding of local laws, port regulations, and government procedures.
- Experience in managing compliance and facilitating permits and approvals.
- Ability to align operational activities with corporate strategy.
- Skilled in tracking initiatives, resolving bottlenecks, and ensuring timely execution.
- Strong coordination skills across multiple terminals and departments.
- Experience in managing interdependencies and supporting cross-functional initiatives.
