Job Description
As the Head of Logistics East Africa, you will define the East Africa Logistics strategy and capability priorities. Will be instrumental in growing our existing offering within an end-to-end supply chain. This role will be responsible for the leadership, strategic alignment, business development and commercial coordination within the DP World Logistics portfolio in SSA. The role will directly contribute towards the SSA Logistics revenue and appropriate financial targets. The role links and provides customer solutions leveraging all DP World capabilities in the region.
Key Performance Areas:
- Formulate the SSA Logistics East Africa strategy aligned to DP World Group, SSA and the respective Pillar strategies and KPI’s priorities
- Set strategic direction for the Logistics capability in East Africa and associated capabilities, and cascade strategic priorities into the cluster and Operating Companies
- Demonstrate the ability to translate a Regional level strategy into tangible sub-regional and country business plans
- Establish and align the required Logistics East Africa structures, standards and capabilities to ensure that it supports and enables the DP World SSA and SSA logistics objectives and strategy, and drives a high performing team
- Develop, implement, and take accountability for SSA Logistics East Africa strategies according to company goals and objectives aiming to accelerate growth, and that positively influence the DP World revenue, operating profit and return on invested capital
- Establish strategic relationships and agreements with customers that create value for both the customer and the end user of the product
- Lead key customer relationships and serve as the expert for logistics solutions. Identify and understand the opportunities, challenges and potential partner priorities to establish mutually beneficial partnerships/commercial relationships
- Identify key acquisitions to meet Logistics East Africa targets, and lead the acquisition and integration efforts in collaboration with other stakeholders
- Pro-actively work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that Logistics SSA cluster market/service positioning in East Africa is clear and defined to maximise growth opportunities
- Support and implement mid-term business development plans including budget and P&L responsibility for Logistics East Africa
- Expand and grow the Logistics East Africa capability beyond current categories and capabilities, in accordance with SSA Logistics Regional and DP World Global priorities and strategies. This will include growth, expansion and management of operations across Contract Logistics, Road Freight and 4 PL capabilities.
- Ensure that Logistics East Africa operations (including value-added services), and commercial aspects are coordinated and executed in way that ensures optimal customer service
- Proactively identify and manage business uncertainties and opportunities, and implement action plans to mitigate supply chain risks
- Drive decision making process through integrated business planning with regional and global stakeholders and senior leaders (Commercial, Finance, etc.) in order to maximize service to customers and meet DP World objectives
- Build effective relationships and facilitate collaboration across the DP World group of companies to drive projects to completion and improve processes
- Lead key customer relationships to ensure the delivery of the growth strategy over a 3 to 5 year period
- Continuously evaluate industry, market and technology trends to assess the potential impact on operational and business opportunities. Make recommendations and drive key projects to leverage opportunities
- Formulate Logistics SSA East Africa budget to ensure that the strategic deliverables are adequately budgeted for
- Ensure effective fiscal management in compliance with Company standards
- Lead, define and ensure compliance with budgeted revenue and operating income goals
- Analyse monthly financial performance indicators and trends, make necessary adjustments to ensure profitability, and submit required reports timeously
- Lead the DP World HR agenda, including the effective management of workforce planning, recruitment, learning and development, performance management, reward and recognition, talent management, and employee relations in line with Group policies and procedures
- Drive the development of a healthy, high-performance culture across the Logistics SSA East Africa, in alignment with DP World cultural objectives
- Ensure, and assume ultimate accountability for the implementation of continuous improvement, health, safety and sustainability best practices for the Logistics East Africa
- Interpret and ensure compliance to regulatory requirements across all operating entities
Job Context
The Head of Logistics East Africa is critical for setting the strategic direction of the capability across the East Africa cluster and drive alignment. Role will set long-term strategic goals and help shape the future of the logistics capability and the SSA Region. The role links and provides customer solutions leveraging DP World capabilities in the region.
The position is based out of SSA East Africa Region.
Qualifications Required:
- Relevant post-graduate degree
Experience and Skills Required:
- 10+ years’ experience in the supply chain industry, including experience managing supply chain activities
- 8+ years’ in a similar or senior executive role for a global supply chain multinational
- Proven experience and demonstrable success in establishing, scaling, and growing logistics operations across multiple countries and capabilities, including cross-border service development, operational setup, commercial growth, and team enablement
- Experience in the East African Region, notably proven experience in dealing with local cultural, legal, government structures and sociopolitical nuances
