JOB ROLE

To monitor all boilers and turbine, bagasse handling, and conveyors to ensure all equipment and machines are running in optimal condition and executes involved level of maintenance work on assemblies / sub-assemblies in the mechanical system of boilers and powerhouse equipment.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Ensuring monitoring of boiler equipment, conveyors and all associated equipment are running smoothly.
• Communicating with the Control Room Operator or Foreman and exchanging information on the physical plant status and engaging on options/solutions based on plant knowledge that can be applied to address faults and failures or deviations in the operating parameters.
• Implementing solutions and monitoring the outcomes and providing feedback on the plant status to the Control Room or Foreman.
• Avoid unnecessary downtime by reporting and Initialize fixing of any abnormalities to allow preventive maintenance.
• Performs all tasks according to Kilombero Sugar’s Safety, Quality, Health and Environment policies and procedures.
• Always maintain housekeeping during the shift.
• Carry out root cause analysis of simple non-conformances & propose actions.
• Ensure all pressure readings are readable from respective pressure gauges and read correctly.
• Report any pipe or tube leak to Foreman immediately and record it for corrective action.
• Always attend bagasse feeder to maintain steam pressure.
• Together with the Steam and power Foreman, Control room operator and site Operators/Attendant, diagnose the cause of problems/breakdowns by applying the necessary problem-solving tools, e.g. 5Why, Fishbone etc.
• Make regular inspections of ash hoppers and nodding ducts to improve boiler effectiveness.
• Make regular inspections of the ash sluicing systems to ensure that they are effectively sealed.
• Ensure water flow properly through ash hoppers and nodding ducts of gutters.
• Assess combustion condition and bagasse level on furnace bed by opening furnace inspection windows regularly and communicating over/underfeeding with Boiler Control Room Operator.
• Ensure the grate chain drive is running well and smoothly by frequent checks on the motor speed and output coupling movement.
• Ensure availability of enough bagasse by frequently visiting and inspecting the situation in the bagasse house and advise the Foreman for correct action in case the bagasse house is getting full or running out of bagasse.
• Maintain high steam pressure whenever the mill stops by checking the bagasse house to ensure back feeding is being done effectively to avoid low steam pressure/LTA.
• Monitor the movements of the tractors and front loader during the shift by logging down running hours in a logbook.
• Ensure the fire hydrants and fire hose boxes are not covered by accumulated bagasse and are ready for use.
• Ensure the condensate level is high.
• Record production data and any other required information on appropriate log sheets and logbooks.
• Conducting inspections i.e. visual checks of the operating equipment to detect deviations by been alert to abnormal sounds, surface heat, etc. and proceeding with completing inspection checklists or verbally communicating with the Powerhouse Technician or Foreman on the findings.
• Executing maintenance related activities involving inspecting, stripping, fault finding, repairing or replacing, aligning and assembling of parts/units of an assembly or complete assemblies with integrated arrangements in the mechanical system of Boilers and Powerhouse equipment.
• Monitoring and communicating activity related information to cleaners in terms of areas to be cleaned, disposal procedures, etc.

MUST HAVE SKILLS

• Adhere to Safety and lockout procedure during operation.
• Understanding complex plant operations.
• Ability to work in hot environments.

QUALIFICATIONS / JOB REQUIREMENTS

• Certificate/Diploma in Mechanics or equivalent from a recognized Institution.
• Certificate in Fitter Mechanics will be an added advantage.
• At least 3 years working in Sugar Industry specifically boiler operation.

TERMS OF SERVICE

The successful candidate will be engaged on a Permanent Contract.
