Job Purpose

To monitor all boilers and turbine, bagasse handling, and conveyors to ensure all equipment and machines are running in optimal condition and execute the required level of maintenance work on assemblies and sub-assemblies in the mechanical system of boilers and powerhouse equipment.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

• Ensure monitoring of boiler equipment, conveyors, and all associated equipment are running smoothly.
• Communicate with the Control Room Operator or Foreman, exchange information on the physical plant status, and engage on options and solutions based on plant knowledge to address faults, failures, or deviations in operating parameters.
• Implement solutions, monitor outcomes, and provide feedback on plant status to the Control Room or Foreman.
• Avoid unnecessary downtime by reporting and initiating the fixing of any abnormalities to allow preventive maintenance.
• Perform all tasks according to Kilombero Sugar's Safety, Quality, Health, and Environment policies and procedures.
• Maintain good housekeeping during the shift.
• Carry out root cause analysis of simple non-conformances and propose corrective actions.
• Ensure all pressure readings are readable from the respective pressure gauges and read correctly.
• Report any pipe or tube leak to the Foreman immediately and record it for corrective action.
• Attend the bagasse feeder at all times to maintain steam pressure.
• Work together with the Steam and Power Foreman, Control Room Operator, and Site Operators/Attendants to diagnose the cause of problems or breakdowns by applying problem-solving tools such as 5 Why and Fishbone Analysis.
• Make regular inspections of ash hoppers and nodding ducts to improve boiler effectiveness.
• Make regular inspections of the ash sluicing systems to ensure they are effectively sealed.
• Ensure water flows properly through ash hoppers and nodding ducts of gutters.
• Assess combustion conditions and bagasse levels on the furnace bed by regularly opening furnace inspection windows and communicating overfeeding or underfeeding conditions with the Boiler Control Room Operator.
• Ensure the grate chain drive is running properly and smoothly by frequently checking the motor speed and output coupling movement.
• Ensure there is enough bagasse available by frequently visiting and inspecting the bagasse house and advising the Foreman when the bagasse house is becoming full or running out of bagasse.
• Maintain high steam pressure whenever the mill stops by checking the bagasse house to ensure back feeding is done effectively to avoid low steam pressure or LTA.
• Monitor the movements of tractors and front loaders during the shift by recording running hours in a logbook.
• Ensure fire hydrants and fire hose boxes are not covered by accumulated bagasse and are always ready for use.
• Ensure the condensate level remains high.
• Record production data and any other required information on the appropriate log sheets and logbooks.
• Conduct inspections, including visual checks of operating equipment, to detect deviations by remaining alert to abnormal sounds, surface heat, and other signs, then complete inspection checklists or verbally communicate findings to the Powerhouse Technician or Foreman.
• Execute maintenance-related activities including inspecting, stripping, fault finding, repairing or replacing, aligning, and assembling parts, units, or complete assemblies within the mechanical system of boilers and powerhouse equipment.
• Monitor and communicate activity-related information to cleaners regarding areas to be cleaned, disposal procedures, and other related instructions.

Required Skills

• Adhere to safety and lockout procedures during operation.
• Understanding of complex plant operations.
• Ability to work in hot environments.

Qualifications

• Certificate or Diploma in Mechanics or equivalent from a recognized institution.
• Certificate in Fitter Mechanics will be an added advantage.
• At least three (3) years of working experience in the sugar industry, specifically in boiler operation.

Terms of Service

• The successful candidate will be engaged on a Permanent Contract.
