Job Description

Position Summary

Ifakara Health Institute through Transmission Zero Project is looking for a highly motivated and skilled professional with expertise in molecular biology and related fields. The role requires a strong understanding of molecular biology techniques and the ability to contribute effectively to genomics and transgenesis research activities. The selected candidate will contribute to the cutting-edge Transmission Zero (T0) project, supporting the advancement of transgenesis research at IHI and in Tanzania at large toward malaria control and elimination. Transmission Zero is a global malaria research programme at IHI focused on developing innovative genetic tools to interrupt malaria transmission in Africa.

Responsibility:

  • Ensure mandatory compliance with safety protocols and procedures within a Biosafety Level 3 (BSL- 3) laboratory facility.
  • Perform comprehensive laboratory experiments involving the analysis of DNA, RNA, and proteins.
  • Apply molecular biology techniques such as PCR, DNA/RNA sequencing, and gel electrophoresis in transgenesis research
  • Contribute to execution of genetic manipulations, including design of DNA constructs through gene editing applications such as CRISPR-Cas9 technology
  • Contribute to microinjection procedures using DNA constructs, followed by screening and characterization of gene-edited samples through microscopy.
  • Contribute to the adaptation, maintenance, and handling of malaria parasite cultures for experimental studies
  • Perform direct membrane feeding assays (DMFA) and standard membrane feeding assays (SMFA).
  • Contribute to optimization of experimental protocols and the maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed, and up-to-date records of all laboratory experiments and findings.
  • Engage in literature reviews of transgenesis related work and prepare

Skill :

  • Ability to work as part of the team and independently
  • Computer skills (Microsoft office (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint,).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Skills on STATA, R Studio etc. will be an added advantage

Qualification Required:

  • Master's degree in molecular biology, genetics, biotechnology, parasitology or a related field.

Experience :

  • Knowledge of safety protocols and laboratory practices in molecular biology and parasitology related research.
  • Hands-on experience and strong background in molecular biology and parasitology techniques is an added advantage.

Preferred Language Skill :

  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal in (English & Swahili)
