Job Description

Perseus Mining (Tanzania) Limited (SMLC) is seeking a Fixed Asset Accountant.

The Fixed Asset Accountant is responsible for the accurate recognition, classification, tracking and reporting of all capital assets at a large-scale gold mine in Tanzania. The role ensures compliance with company policy, IFRS and Tanzanian regulations, and provides clear visibility over the mine’s fixed asset base across all departments (mining, processing, infrastructure, support services).

Key Responsibilities

1. Fixed Asset Accounting & Reporting

  • Maintain the fixed asset register for the mine, ensuring completeness, accuracy and timely updates.
  • Record asset acquisitions, transfers, disposals and retirements in accordance with company policies and IFRS (IAS 16, IAS 36, IFRS 16, etc.).
  • Calculate and post monthly depreciation, amortisation and impairment entries in the ERP/general ledger.
  • Reconcile the fixed asset register to the general ledger and investigate any variances.
  • Prepare fixed asset schedules and disclosures for monthly, quarterly and annual reporting.

2. Capital Expenditure (Capex) Management

  • Monitor capital projects from approval to completion, ensuring proper set-up of project codes, budgets and categories.
  • Review capital expenditure requests (AFEs/Capex proposals) for correct classification between capital and operating expenditure.
  • Track work-in-progress (WIP) balances and ensure timely capitalisation when assets are ready for use.
  • Monitor project costs against approved budgets and highlight overruns or irregularities to management.
  • Support financial evaluations and post‑completion reviews of major capital projects.

3. Physical Verification & Asset Control

  • Coordinate and participate in periodic physical verification of fixed assets across the mine site (pit, plant, workshops, camps, infrastructure).
  • Investigate discrepancies between physical counts and the fixed asset register; propose and process necessary adjustments.
  • Implement and maintain asset tagging, location coding, and custody records to strengthen asset control.
  • Support the development and enforcement of asset ownership and accountability practices across departments.

4. Compliance, Policies & Internal Controls

  • Ensure fixed asset accounting complies with IFRS, Tanzanian reporting requirements and internal accounting policies.
  • Assist in developing, updating and implementing fixed asset and capitalisation policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Maintain strong internal controls over capex approvals, asset recording, disposals, impairments and write‑offs.
  • Support internal and external audits by preparing schedules, providing documentation, and addressing audit queries/findings.

5. Life‑of‑Mine, Impairment & Componentisation

  • Work with engineering and maintenance teams to establish and maintain appropriate asset componentisation (e.g., major plant components, mobile fleet).
  • Maintain accurate useful lives, residual values and depreciation methods reflecting operational reality and mine plans.
  • Support impairment assessments (IAS 36) and life‑of‑mine reviews, including gathering data on production plans, reserves, and asset utilisation.
  • Assist with closure asset tracking and rehabilitation asset accounting where applicable.

6. Lease Accounting & Right‑of‑Use Assets (if applicable)

  • Maintain records of lease contracts and assess them under IFRS 16 for recognition of right‑of‑use assets and lease liabilities.
  • Record and reconcile right‑of‑use assets, depreciation and interest on lease liabilities in the ERP/general ledger.
  • Monitor changes to lease terms, extensions or terminations and process modifications accordingly.

7. Stakeholder Support & Communication

  • Work closely with supply chain, projects, engineering, maintenance and operations to ensure accurate capture and classification of capital costs.
  • Provide asset-related analysis and reports to mine management (e.g., asset age profile, utilisation, replacement planning support).
  • Train non‑finance staff on key aspects of capitalisation rules, asset tagging and documentation requirements.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Commerce or related field.
  • Professional accounting qualification or progress towards one (CPA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) preferred.
  • Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in accounting, with at least 2 years focused on fixed assets/capex in a capital‑intensive industry.
  • Experience in mining (gold preferred), oil & gas, construction, manufacturing, or other heavy industry is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with IFRS (especially IAS 16, IAS 36, IAS 37, IFRS 16) and Tanzanian tax and regulatory environment is an advantage.
  • Experience with ERP systems and fixed asset modules (e.g., SAP, Pronto, Sage).
