Job Description

Perseus Mining (Tanzania) Limited (SMLC) is seeking an Inventory Accountant.

The Inventory Accountant is responsible for accurate valuation, control and reporting of all inventories for a large-scale gold mine in Tanzania, including consumables, spares, fuel, reagents, explosives, ore stockpiles and gold-in-process. The role supports effective cost control, production reporting and compliance with company policies, IFRS and Tanzanian regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Inventory Accounting & Valuation

•Maintain accurate inventory records in the ERP system for all warehouses and stock locations.

•Ensure appropriate valuation methods are applied (e.g. weighted average cost, standard cost) in line with company policy and IFRS.

•Calculate and post monthly inventory adjustments, including stock movements, cost allocations, shrinkage and write downs.

•Prepare monthly inventory valuation reports and reconcile inventory sub-ledgers to the general ledger.

•Account for ore stockpiles, work in process and finished gold in process inventories in line with IAS 2 and relevant mining industry practices.

Reconciliation & Month End Close

•Perform detailed reconciliations between physical stock, inventory module, and GL balances.

•Investigate and resolve differences related to receipts, issues, transfers, returns and unit cost discrepancies.

•Coordinate cut off procedures at month end to ensure accurate capture of goods in transit, GRNs and un invoiced receipts.

•Prepare inventory-related journals (reclassifications, provisions, adjustments) and supporting documentation.

•Provide inventory schedules and commentary as part of monthly management reporting.

Cost Control & Usage Analysis

•Analyse inventory usage by department, cost centre and project; highlight abnormal consumption or trends.

•Work with Supply Chain, Maintenance, Mining and Processing teams to understand key cost drivers.

•Support standard cost and bill-of-materials reviews for critical items and consumables.

•Assist in setting and reviewing consumption norms (e.g., fuel burn rates, tyre life, reagent usage) and monitoring actuals against standards.

•Provide inventory and consumption data to support budgeting, forecasting and cost reduction initiatives.

Stocktakes, Cycle Counts & Internal Control

•Coordinate and participate in periodic stocktakes and cycle counts for all warehouses and critical inventory categories.

•Develop and maintain stocktake procedures, count instructions and variance investigation guidelines.

•Review and approve stock adjustments arising from counts, ensuring adequate explanations and authorisations.

•Assess and strengthen internal controls over inventory receiving, storage, issuing, returns and write offs.

•Ensure appropriate segregation of duties between warehouse, supply chain and finance functions.

Inventory Provisioning & Obsolescence

•Monitor slow-moving, obsolete and excess stock; prepare ageing and turnover analyses.

•Recommend and calculate provisions for obsolete, damaged or non-moving inventory in line with company policy and IFRS.

•Work with user departments and supply chain to manage write offs, disposals and stock rationalisation programs.

Systems, Processes & Data Integrity

•Maintain the integrity of inventory master data (item codes, descriptions, units of measure, costing parameters).

•Support implementation and optimisation of ERP inventory and warehouse management modules.

•Identify and drive process improvements to enhance accuracy, efficiency and control over inventory transactions.

•Provide training and guidance to warehouse and end user staff on inventory procedures and documentation requirements.

Compliance, Audit & Reporting

•Ensure inventory accounting complies with IFRS (particularly IAS 2), Tanzanian regulations and company policies.

•Prepare inventory schedules and supporting documents for internal and external audits; address audit queries and findings.

•Support corporate reporting requirements (group consolidation packs, standard templates, KPIs) relating to inventory.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Commerce or related field.
  • Professional qualification (CPA, ACCA, CIMA) or progress towards one preferred.
  • 3–5 years’ experience in accounting, with at least 2 years focused on inventory/stock accounting in a capital‑intensive or manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in mining (gold preferred), oil & gas, manufacturing, or other heavy industry strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of IFRS, particularly IAS 2 (Inventories); familiarity with Tanzanian tax and regulatory environment is an advantage.
  • Hands‑on experience with ERP systems and inventory modules (e.g., SAP, Pronto, Sage).
