Job Purpose

Develop the estate’s cane supply and agricultural strategy to ensure long-term growth, sustainability, and efficiency while managing agricultural production within budget and achieving cost synergies.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop long-term cane supply, agriculture strategy, and yield forecasts, ensuring regular strategy updates and implementation initiatives.
• Prepare annual agricultural operations plans for crop establishment, husbandry, and removal, including innovation and adoption of new technologies aligned with sustainability and conservation requirements.
• Build, lead, and develop a strong agricultural leadership team and talent pipeline through coaching, mentoring, and guidance.
• Drive performance management systems that reward high performance and ensure accountability.
• Promote an operational excellence culture focused on improving yield, cost efficiency, and quality.
• Ensure adoption of group agricultural standards, processes, and best practices across crop production, agronomy, engineering, harvesting, haulage, and grower optimisation.
• Provide technical expertise and advisory support to grower agriculture operations.
• Collaborate with group stakeholders to identify and implement optimisation opportunities.
• Manage relationships with growers, key stakeholders, and third-party suppliers.
• Report agricultural performance and key developments to senior management and group agriculture leadership.
• Develop business cases for capital projects and ensure timely delivery of outcomes.
• Manage agricultural risks using approved mitigation systems and processes.
• Promote knowledge sharing, best practices, and continuous improvement within the function.
• Oversee talent and performance management within the agricultural function.
• Ensure compliance with SHERQ, competition law, anti-bribery, and other corporate policies.
• Ensure systems and processes are in place to support operational effectiveness.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agricultural Development, Agricultural Engineering, or Agricultural Economics.
• Minimum 10 years of experience in sugarcane agriculture.
• At least 5 years in a senior agricultural operations role managing more than 3,000 hectares.
• Experience in cane supply and grower optimisation.
• Business or commercial qualification is an added advantage.
