Background Bank of India is a major public sector bank with over a century of history and a vast international presence. Its Tanzania subsidiary is looking for a seasoned leader to oversee the bank’s comprehensive business operations and management.

Role Purpose Reporting directly to the Managing Director and the Board, the General Manager serves as the overall in-charge of key departments including Credit, Risk and Compliance, Human Resources, and the branch network. The role is central to driving strategic growth while maintaining a robust regulatory and risk management framework.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Operational Leadership and Management Oversee the daily functioning of the bank’s business operations and various departments. Act as the Convener of the Executive Committee (EXCO) to drive organizational decisions. Manage relationships with bank vendors and external service providers.

Policy and Risk Governance Annually revise and update bank policies for Board and Regulator approval. Develop and implement comprehensive risk mitigation strategies. Analyze complex risk scenarios and prepare strategic agendas for the Board and its Committees.

Regulatory and Stakeholder Liaison Maintain regular contact with statutory authorities such as the Bank of Tanzania (BOT) and the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA). Ensure strict compliance with all BOT regulations, guidelines, and internal bank policies. Engage with other local banks and high-level corporate customers.

Business Development Actively canvass and mobilize new business to expand the bank’s market presence. Convince and build relationships with major clients to support portfolio growth.

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

Education Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy, Banking, Finance, Business Administration, or Risk and Compliance. Professional certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is a significant added advantage.

Experience Minimum of 10 years in commercial banking. At least 3 years must be in a senior management position. Extensive experience in credit and lending portfolio management and credit risk assessment.

Skills and Attributes Strong strategic thinking and leadership capabilities. Deep knowledge of banking regulations and business operations. Advanced analytical skills and proficiency in computer software like Excel. Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
