Job Description

Responsible for leading NMB's strategic engagement with Financial Institutions, correspondent banks, Development Finance Institutions (DFIs), Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), and International Organizations (IOs) growing and deepening institutional relationships that diversify the bank's funding sources, unlock trade finance limits, Guarantees to support off-balance sheet capacity, and secure technical assistance and capacity building support for NMB and its business units.

The role also facilitates opportunities for NMB's management to share the bank's expertise and success within development finance and institutional partner networks.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain strong cordial relationships with local banks, foreign correspondent banks, non-bank financial institutions, DFIs, MDBs, IOs, and other related clients under this role, to develop, promote and support growth of the bank's business.
  • Grow and diversify the FIs, DFIs and MDBs clients' portfolio in terms of geographic locations, currencies (Nostro accounts), and investment/financing philosophies (impact versus general investors).
  • Negotiate lines of credit/limits with local and foreign FIs, DFIs and MDBs to facilitate transactions and drive revenues across various products including trade finance, money markets, foreign exchange, derivatives, cash, and capital markets products.
  • Negotiate pricing on products and services offered by correspondent banks, DFIs, MDBs and other non-bank FIs to ensure we remain competitive in the market.
  • Cross sell NMB's products and services to FIs, DFIs and MDBs to maximize business from each relationship.
  • Act as a point of contact for all FIs, DFIs and MDBs dealing with NMB to ensure all queries and complaints related to these clients are addressed timely.

    Funding
  • Develop and implement strategies to raise mid and long-term financing for the bank in line with the bank's growth ambitions. Liaise with other business units to establish asset pipelines and related funding needs.
  • Manage an optimal growth in liabilities (borrowings) with a diverse use of proceeds from new and existing FIs, DFIs and MDBs clients.
  • Manage existing loans from DFIs and MDBs and monitor development of various internal and external factors to decide on early repayments, cancellation, renewal, or conversion of the loan status (senior or subordinated).
  • Co-ordinate and manage an end-to-end borrowing process from DFIs and MDBs including internal and external approvals, due diligence, negotiation and execution of the financing contracts, and post funding reporting.
  • Work with Trading and ALM teams to hedge against any significant financial risks (interest rates and exchange rates) related to the banks borrowings.

    Partnerships and Investments
  • Research and analyze selected FIs, DFIs, MDBs and IOs investment policies, strategies, trends, and operations to identify areas for potential collaboration.
  • Facilitate potential equity partnerships between NMB and FIs, DFIs and MDBs.
  • Work with the Advisory team & Strategy and Growth department to arrange participation of FIs, DFIs and MDBs in other investment opportunities including public and private capital markets transactions.
  • Work with the Advisory team on the NMB's overall investment process in corporate bonds and other securities publicly or privately issued by FIs, DFIs and MDBs.
  • Organize, co-arrange and/or participate in FIs, DFIs and MDBs events, initiatives, and programs, both locally and abroad.

    Thought Leadership & Technical Assistance
  • Proactively identify and solicit technical assistance (TA) grants, capacity building programs, and advisory support available from DFIs, MDBs, for NMB and its business units, including in areas such as sustainable finance, digital lending, gender lens investing, trade finance, and treasury operations.
  • Manage end-to-end engagement with DFI and MDB TA programs, from scoping and application through to implementation and reporting, ensuring NMB maximises the value of available non-financial support from its institutional partners. This also include trainings, consulting/advisory services, and exchange programs for staff.
  • Identify and facilitate thought leadership opportunities for NMB senior management and subject matter experts to participate in panels, conferences, publications, and forums hosted or convened by DFIs, MDBs, IOs, and industry bodies, showcasing the bank's expertise, innovations, and impact.
  • Coordinate the development and submission of NMB's success stories, case studies, and best practice contributions to DFI and MDB knowledge platforms, annual reports, and impact publications, reinforcing the bank's position as a leading development finance partner in the region.
  • Work closely with Marketing, Communications, and business units to align external thought leadership engagements with NMB's strategic narrative, ensuring management participation in DFI/MDB-convened events is purposeful and reflective of the bank's capabilities and ambitions.

    Operations Focus
  • Work with the compliance department to ensure thorough performance of AML/KYC and due diligence on the FIs, DFIs, MDBs, IOs and other related clients under this role as per the approved standards and ensure up to date information is held.
  • Coordinate and manage the responses to all KYC requests, reviews, and due diligence process on NMB by the existing and potential FIs, DFIs, MDBs, credit rating agencies, payment service providers and the wider institutional investor community related to the role.
  • Manage the requirements of all existing Nostro and Vostro accounts to ensure compliance.
  • Prepare credit limit proposals for new and existing FIs, DFIs, MDBs and other related clients under this role, for board's approval.
  • Ensure timely settlement of all obligations NMB owes its FIs, DFIs, MDBs and related clients under this role.
  • Coordinate/arrange and manage meetings between NMB and its existing and potential FIs, DFIs MDBs and related clients under this role, both inside and outside the country.
  • Ensure adherence to all pre and post funding requirements/ Covenants by FIs, DFIs and MDBs as per the executed financing contracts.

    Leadership & People Management Focus
  • Oversee the implementation of the desk's strategy.
  • Utilize appropriate leadership styles to motivate, direct, coach and inspire direct reports and other team members to achieve the required performance objectives.
  • Provide a clear direction to subordinates on the strategic plan and key focus areas of the desk and create measures to improve productivity.
  • Align on the targets with direct reports and take accountability for the overall achievements of performance objectives for the desk, and adherence to risk, compliance and governance requirements.
  • Ensure there is an effective career development plan (trainings, workshops, job rotation etc.) for direct reports.
  • Establish and maintain a succession plan for key roles in the desk.
  • Act as a first level of escalation for all grievances raised about the desk by internal and external stakeholders.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • A thorough understanding of the overall banking environment with a good awareness of the impacts of evolving political, economic, technological, and regulatory landscapes on the banking industry, both locally and globally.
  • Strong technical knowledge on products and/or practices in Treasury and Capital Markets, Trade Finance, International Banking, Correspondent Banking, Payments, credit analysis on Financial Institutions and Sustainable Finance.
  • Technical knowledge of project finance is a bonus.
  • In-depth understanding of different international financing/funding arrangements by MDBs and DFIs including bilateral, syndicated, and capital markets financing arrangements, both thematic and non-thematic.
  • Expert knowledge on drivers, trends, forecasts and impacts of local and global macro and micro economic indicators in the financial services industry.
  • Sound understanding of the bank's strategy, operating structure, and interfaces with other functions in meeting business objectives.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Banking, Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related fields.
  • A postgraduate degree or qualification in a relevant field is an added advantage.
  • A professional certification in Accounting, Finance, Treasury, Credit Analysis, Sustainability and/or Sustainable Finance is an added advantage.
  • A minimum of 7 years' relevant experience with at least 4 years in a senior managerial position.
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging and working with local, regional, and global Financial Institutions (FIs), Development Finance Institutions (DFIs), Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), and other International Organizations (IOs) such as UN, IMF etc.
