Job Purpose

The Fleets Team Leader is responsible for managing regional fleet operations to achieve targeted vehicle availability. The role focuses on reducing vehicle downtime, managing preventative maintenance, conducting fleet inspections and audits, ensuring vehicle licensing, maintaining fleet data accuracy, and promoting fleet safety, health, and environmental compliance. The position also provides leadership, coaching, and performance management to the fleet team while driving operational excellence and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Fleet Operations Management

  • Manage regional fleet execution to achieve targeted vehicle availability.
  • Proactively manage vehicle downtime.
  • Conduct fleet inspections and audits.
  • Ensure accurate and up-to-date fleet data and information.
  • Plan and implement preventative maintenance activities.
  • Manage vehicle licensing.
  • Ensure compliance with fleet safety, health, and environmental standards.

Leadership and Team Management

  • Provide leadership, coaching, and direction to the fleet team.
  • Coach team members on operational and technical tasks.
  • Ensure proper monitoring of operational inputs and outputs.
  • Drive innovation, continuous improvement, and change initiatives.
  • Verify that quality checks are completed and recorded correctly.
  • Identify training needs through performance reviews and one-on-one sessions.
  • Guide and support employee development and engagement.
  • Plan workforce requirements, support recruitment, and retain talent.
  • Foster positive employee relations.

Fleet Data Management

  • Maintain accurate fleet master data and operational information.

Operations and Process Control

  • Ensure compliance with fleet procedures, work instructions, maintenance schedules, and operational standards.
  • Support team members in applying structured problem-solving techniques such as the 5 Why method and quick fixes.
  • Resolve escalated operational issues and update work instructions after successful resolution.
  • Implement and monitor Short Interval Control (SIC) mechanisms to reduce waste.
  • Incorporate waste reduction and process improvement goals into team objectives.
  • Track and display improvement initiatives.
  • Evaluate process improvement opportunities and engage specialist resources where necessary.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in Automobile Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Logistics, Transport Management, or a related field.
  • Previous technical experience in fleet management or a related role.
  • Minimum of three years of line management experience.
  • Understanding of key business cost drivers.
  • Project management skills and experience.
  • Strong judgement and decision-making skills.
  • Experience with fleet mix management, vendor selection, KPI selection, budget management, logistics service recommendations, productivity analysis, and cost analysis.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of fleet performance measurement.
  • Understanding of lean management principles.
  • Knowledge of execution planning and schedule control.
  • Project management and change management knowledge.
  • Strong problem-solving techniques.
  • Ability to apply technical fleet management knowledge effectively.
