Mission and objectives:

  • UpdaIOM Tanzania works with the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, communities, UN agencies, development partners and civil society to support safe, orderly and regular migration, strengthen migration governance, enhance protection and assistance to vulnerable migrants and affected communities, and contribute to resilience, preparedness and sustainable development priorities across the country.
  • Strategic communications, visibility and public information are essential to communicate IOM Tanzania's work, demonstrate results, strengthen donor and partner visibility, support evidence-based public messaging, and ensure coherent Country Office communications across programmes. The role will therefore support mission-level communications and visibility requirements, including content development, event communications, public information materials, social media updates, newsletters, donor visibility products, internal updates and documentation of key activities. Within this wider mission context, the RE2CLID - Resilience and Climate-Induced Displacement Programme supports governments, communities and partners in the Lake Tanganyika basin to address climate- and disaster-related displacement through integrated approaches that strengthen preparedness and coordination while advancing community-driven recovery, resilience and longer-term solutions.
  • Under the supervision of the Head of Programmes, in collaboration with the Project Officer - MECC/DRR and in coordination with relevant programme teams and regional/global communications colleagues as needed, the UN National Volunteer will support the planning, production, clearance and dissemination of communications and visibility products for both IOM Tanzania mission-level priorities and RE2CLID programme activities. This includes field missions, stakeholder consultations, community engagement, donor visibility, media content, social media updates, newsletters, human-interest stories, photo and video documentation, event visibility, internal updates and knowledge products.

Context:

  • The UN National Volunteer will support communications, visibility, public information and knowledge management efforts across IOM Tanzania's diverse portfolio of programmes, including migration governance, climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, resilience building, displacement and humanitarian response, while enhancing donor visibility and documenting results and impact. A key focus will be the EU-funded RE2CLID (Regional Responses to Climate Displacement in Sub-Saharan Africa) programme, which supports governments and communities in addressing climate-induced displacement through resilience-building, preparedness, adaptation and community-driven solutions. Through this role, the UN Volunteer will help communicate IOM Tanzania's achievements, lessons learned and evidence-based stories to partners, donors and the public.

Task description:

  • Support the development, implementation and regular updating of mission-level communications and visibility plans for IOM Tanzania, ensuring alignment with IOM communication standards, donor visibility requirements and approved Country Office priorities.
  • Provide communications and visibility support across relevant mission activities, including official events, field missions, trainings, stakeholder engagements, partner consultations, public information initiatives and internal coordination processes.
  • Draft, edit and coordinate high-quality communication products for mission-level and programme-specific use, including human-interest stories, web articles, press notes, social media content, newsletters, captions, talking points, briefing notes, presentations, visibility updates and internal communication materials.
  • Support the documentation of IOM Tanzania activities through photography, short videos, interviews, quotes, case studies and other storytelling materials, ensuring informed consent, protection-sensitive messaging and ethical content collection.
  • Support donor visibility and branding compliance across mission and programme products by reviewing banners, reports, presentations, event materials, social media assets, publications and other communication products to ensure correct use of logos, acknowledgements, messaging and visual identity requirements.
  • Coordinate with programme teams, field staff, government counterparts, implementing partners, communications colleagues and relevant mission units to identify communication opportunities, gather content, validate technical information and ensure timely production of relevant reports and clearance of visibility materials.
  • Maintain mission-level communications content calendars and repositories of approved photos, videos, stories, captions, key messages, media materials, visibility products and knowledge materials for use across Country Office communications and reporting needs.
  • Support media monitoring, social media tracking and communications reporting by compiling visibility outputs, engagement data, media mentions, success stories and lessons learned for donor reports, mission updates, programme reporting and internal coordination.
  • Provide dedicated communications and visibility support to the RE2CLID programme, including documentation of climate resilience, disaster risk reduction, community engagement, displacement-related activities, and donor visibility actions.
  • Contribute to the development of public information and communication materials that promote community engagement, accountability to affected populations, inclusion and clear messaging across migration, protection, resilience, disaster risk reduction, durable solutions and other relevant mission programming areas.
  • Perform other related communications, visibility and public information duties as may be assigned by the supervisor in support of Country Office and programme priorities.
