Job Description

The Underwriting Officer will be responsible for assessing and underwriting general insurance risks, ensuring that all policies are issued in accordance with the Company's underwriting guidelines, risk appetite, and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and underwrite proposals for general insurance products, including Motor, Fire, Engineering, Marine, Liability, Personal Accident, and other general insurance classes.
  • Evaluate risk exposure and determine appropriate terms, conditions, coverage limits, and premium rates in accordance with underwriting guidelines.
  • Review proposal forms and supporting documentation to ensure completeness and accuracy before policy issuance.
  • Prepare quotations, issue policies, endorsements, renewals, and related underwriting documentation within agreed service turnaround times.
  • Ensure compliance with the Company's underwriting policies, reinsurance arrangements, regulatory requirements, and internal controls.
  • Liaise with brokers, agents, and clients to obtain additional underwriting information and provide technical support.
  • Monitor policy renewals and retention while maintaining a profitable underwriting portfolio.
  • Work closely with the Claims, Sales, Finance, and Reinsurance teams to ensure efficient service delivery and effective risk management.
  • Assist in the development and enhancement of underwriting guidelines, products, and pricing strategies.
  • Maintain accurate underwriting records and prepare periodic underwriting reports as required.
  • Keep abreast of market trends, emerging risks, competitor products, and changes in insurance regulations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Actuarial Science or a related field.
  • Professional insurance qualifications will be an added advantage.
  • At least three (3) years of underwriting experience in general insurance.
  • Sound knowledge of general insurance products, underwriting principles, and risk assessment techniques.
