Environmental Officer at Perseus Mining Tanzania

Perseus Mining (Tanzania) Limited (SMLC) is seeking an Environmental Officer.

The Environmental Officer is responsible for supporting effective environmental management and compliance across a large-scale gold mining operation in Tanzania. The role supports the implementation of environmental monitoring programmes and the Environmental Management System, including air, water, meteorological, noise and vibration monitoring, while ensuring accurate sampling, analysis, data management and reporting. The position also conducts environmental inspections, identifies and reports non-conformances, develops and tracks corrective actions, maintains monitoring equipment and calibration records, supports environmental audits and regulatory compliance assessments, and contributes to environmental communication, training and community-related activities. The role also supervises environmental technicians and supports the continuous review and improvement of environmental monitoring plans, procedures and site environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities

Health and Safety:

• Takes reasonable care to protect his/her own health and safety and that of other persons who may be affected by any act or omission thereof;
• Takes proper care of PPE and equipment provided for the protection of his/her health and safety and that of other persons;
• Reports to his/her immediate supervisor any situation, which he/she believes, presents a risk to his/her health or safety or that of any other person;
• Co-operates with any person to permit compliance with the duties and responsibilities placed on that person in terms of SMCL Health and Safety Policies;
• Conducts inspections of health and safety conditions and risks in working area and reports and corrects sub-standard item/conditions/risks and unsafe acts to his supervisor; and
• Ensures own and others compliance to relevant Policies, Procedures and Codes of Practices.

Environmental Key Performance Area:

• Support the implementation of Air, Water, Meteorological, Noise & Vibration Monitoring Plan across the mine site;
• Support the implementation and maintenance of the Environmental Management System;
• Collect and analyse required monitoring samples e.g. samples related water quality, dust, gaseous emissions, weather data, noise and vibration;
• Develop and keep-up to date environmental equipment registers, schedule for equipment calibration, ensure all equipment are timely calibrated/serviced and keep records of calibration certificates;
• Prepare a communication and training program, conduct the mine-wide communication & training to employees and contractors about monitoring results e.g. potable water, blasting results, dust data etc.;
• Prepare and submit the required environmental samples to external laboratories for analysis, ensure samples are well preserved and the CoC is duly completed before sample dispatch to the lab;
• Identify environmental non-conformances, unsafe practices, potential environmental aspects and ensure timely reporting of incidents/non-conformities and proposing corrective actions;
• Provide inputs/data for the preparation of daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual monitoring;
• Conduct both planned and unplanned inspections across the site to verify implementation of company standards;
• Prepare inspection reports, develop action plans to address findings and track implementation of required actions;
• Prepare weekly, monthly and quarterly sampling plan and ensure sampling locations are easily identified, inspected and accessible throughout the year;
• Manage the in-house environmental laboratory, ensure availability of sampling gears and monitor stock- levels of environmental monitoring consumables;
• Participate in environmental related community grievances and government joint sampling programs;
• Review and update the monitoring plans and standard operating procedures and propose the required amendment/changes. This includes updates on monitoring locations, frequency and parameters;
• Download all monitoring data using the appropriate software, upload and store them into the available database;
• Participate in internal and external environmental audits and/or compliance assessments;
• Supervise environmental technician and all subordinates under you; plan for day-to day activities under you;
• Any other environmental related task as assigned by supervisor

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities and Attributes:

• Minimum bachelor’s degree in environmental science or environmental engineering or related discipline.

Qualifications & Licences:

• Computer skills in: Environmental Management Software or similar; MS Office Software package and Acquire Database Software package.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Tanzanian and International Regulatory Framework for environmental management in general.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, as officers
