Responsibilities
- Critical Risk Identification & Ownership

This requires translating bowtie logic into practical work procedures, establishing clear role accountabilities, monitoring compliance through supervision, and resolving practical barriers to control execution.
- Critical Control Verification (CCV) & Assurance
- Design and execution of CCV programs using checklists that test effectiveness, not just presence. The Superintendent personally conducts daily verifications and ensures the team of Fatal Risk Officers understand control logic deeply enough to detect degradation before incidents.
- Auditing & Control Effectiveness Assessment
- Conducting three-level assurance reviews (internal self-verification, management review, independent governance review) to confirm controls are achieving the intended risk reduction. Critically, this includes testing whether controls prevent hazards or merely manage consequences.
- Control Owner Capability & Accountability
- Establishing clear accountability, defining competency requirements, assessing capability, and ensuring control owners have resources and authority to execute. Including succession planning and performance management.
- Reporting & Governance
- Providing transparent monthly/quarterly dashboards showing verification completion, deficiency status, corrective action closure rates, trend data, and escalating material issues immediately.
- Continuous Improvement & Innovation
- Benchmarking against industry best practices, evaluating technology solutions for control enhancement, testing new verification methods, and sharing innovations across Barrick's portfolio.
