Job Description
Position Overview:
The Heavy-Duty Machine Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and productive operation of heavy-duty mobile equipment used in mining, material handling, and plant operations. The role includes operating wheel loaders, chain loaders, excavators, and other machinery to support ore extraction, stockpile management, plant feeding, loading, unloading, and general site activities.
The operator is expected to conduct daily equipment inspections, identify and report defects, perform basic operator maintenance, and work closely with mechanics and other operational personnel to ensure continuous production. Previous experience in mining, quarrying, construction, or industrial operations is preferred, together with a strong commitment to safety, operational efficiency, and teamwork.
The Company maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding alcohol and illegal substances. Employees are required to reside at the company camp in Chunya, Mbeya Region, Tanzania, during work rotations and work within structured shift schedules.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safely operate heavy-duty mobile equipment including wheel loaders, chain loaders, excavators, telehandlers, dumpers, and other machinery assigned by the Company.
- Operate equipment efficiently to support mining, ore extraction, material handling, stockpile management, plant feeding, road maintenance, loading and unloading operations.
- Ensure safe loading, transportation, stockpiling, and placement of ore, waste rock, aggregates, consumables, equipment, and other materials.
- Perform daily pre-start inspections and operational checks before using any machinery.
- Identify, record, and immediately report mechanical defects, abnormal equipment performance, hydraulic leaks, safety hazards, or damage.
- Complete routine cleaning, greasing, refueling, and basic operator maintenance in accordance with manufacturer and company requirements.
- Cooperate closely with mechanics during scheduled maintenance, repairs, and equipment servicing.
- Maintain accurate daily production records, equipment logbooks, fuel consumption records, and inspection checklists.
- Operate machinery in accordance with mine plans, supervisor instructions, traffic management procedures, and operational priorities.
- Load crushers, hoppers, conveyors, trucks, and processing equipment while maintaining required production rates and minimizing material loss.
- Perform excavation, trenching, backfilling, leveling, grading, and earthmoving activities as instructed.
- Work safely around personnel, mobile equipment, processing plants, and confined operational areas.
- Maintain constant awareness of surrounding activities to prevent collisions, incidents, or equipment damage.
- Follow all company safety procedures, environmental regulations, and operational standards.
- Participate in toolbox meetings, safety briefings, emergency drills, and operational training sessions.
- Report accidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, and environmental incidents immediately.
- Assist with general site operational activities whenever machinery is not in use.
- Maintain good housekeeping standards around operating areas and equipment.
- Ensure proper care, cleanliness, and security of assigned machinery.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, dispatch personnel, mechanics, plant operators, and fellow equipment operators.
- Work efficiently during day and night shifts while maintaining productivity and safe operating practices.
- Perform any other duties reasonably assigned by management consistent with the position.
