Job Description
Perseus Mining (Tanzania) Limited (SMLC) is seeking a Mining Engineer.
The Mining Engineer supports safe, efficient open-pit mining in line with the SMCL MMP by preparing short- term mine plans, pit designs and production schedules, monitoring execution, and providing technical support to Operations, Drill & Blast and Mine Geology. The role works closely with the mining contractor and internal teams to ensure plans are practical, understood and aligned with production, cost and HSE targets
Key Responsibilities:
1.Mine Planning and Design
- Develop and maintain short-term, medium-term, and long-term mine plans aligned with Life of Mine (LOM) objectives and production targets.
- Design pit phases, pushbacks, haul roads, waste dumps, stockpiles, and other mining infrastructure in accordance with operational and geotechnical requirements.
- Produce excavation designs and mining instructions to support daily and weekly mining activities.
- Ensure mine designs maximize ore recovery while minimizing dilution and operating costs.
- Monitor adherence to approved mine plans and recommend corrective actions where required.
2.Production Planning and Scheduling
- Develop and maintain detailed production schedules to support mining and processing requirements.
- Coordinate mining activities to ensure achievement of planned ore and waste movement targets.
- Monitor mining performance against budget and forecast metrics.
- Identify production constraints and implement solutions to mitigate operational risks.
- Support operational teams through the provision of technical guidance and planning expertise.
3.Operations Support
- Provide technical support to mining operations to ensure safe and efficient execution of mine plans.
- Monitor equipment productivity, mine utilization, cycle times, and operational efficiency.
- Conduct field inspections to verify compliance with designs, plans, and operational standards.
- Work closely with production supervisors to optimize equipment deployment and mine sequencing.
- Assist with operational decision-making to achieve daily, weekly, and monthly production targets.
4.Mine Optimization
- Analyze mining data and operational performance to identify opportunities for productivity improvement and cost reduction.
- Monitor key mining parameters including stripping ratios, equipment performance, mining rates, dilution, and ore recovery.
- Evaluate alternative mining methods and operational strategies to improve mine economics.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing safety, productivity, and operational effectiveness.
- Prepare technical studies and recommendations to support mine optimization projects.
5.Safety, Risk and Compliance
- Ensure mining activities comply with company standards, statutory requirements, and industry best practices.
- Participate in risk assessments, workplace inspections, and incident investigations.
- Identify operational hazards and implement appropriate controls.
- Promote a strong safety culture through visible leadership and adherence to critical controls.
- Support compliance with environmental management plans and regulatory obligations.
6.Reconciliation and Reporting
- Monitor and report production performance against mine plans and budgets.
- Conduct monthly mine reconciliation to assess ore recovery, dilution, grade control, and production compliance.
- Prepare technical reports, dashboards, and performance presentations for management.
- Maintain accurate mining records and production databases.
- Provide analysis and recommendations to improve planning accuracy and operational performance.
7.Stakeholder Management
- collaborate with geology, survey, geotechnical, drill and blast, processing, and operations teams to ensure alignment of mining activities.
- Participate in planning and production meetings.
- Coordinate with contractors and service providers to support mining objectives.
- Provide technical mentoring and coaching to graduate engineers and mining personnel.
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities and Attributes:
Essential:
- At least 3 years of experience in open pit mining
- Knowledge of at least one General Mine Planning and mine scheduling package
- Advanced skill on Microsoft Excel
- Good problem solving and analytical skills
- Exposure in Technical Services and productivity enhancement
- Conversant with heavy equipment earth moving applications
- Good oral and written communication skills
- A team player and who could work under intense pressure
- Good skill in report writing
Desired:
- Knowledge and user of Tsukada software
- Knowledge and user of GIS software
- Knowledge and user of Microsoft office package
Qualifications & Licences:
Essential:
- Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering.
- Eligibility for registration with a recognized professional engineering body.
- Valid driver's licence.
- Competent in mine planning and design software.
Desirable:
- Postgraduate qualification in Mining Engineering or related discipline.
- Project management qualification.
- Supervisory or leadership training.
