Job Summary

The Underground Grader Operator is responsible for operating motor grader equipment in underground mining environments to maintain haul roads, travelways, and working areas. This role ensures safe, efficient, and smooth transportation routes for mining equipment and personnel, contributing to overall productivity and safety compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate underground motor grader to maintain and repair haul roads, ramps, and access ways.
  • Ensure road surfaces are properly graded for drainage, traction, and safe vehicle movement.
  • Remove spillage, debris, and uneven surfaces from roadways.
  • Conduct pre-operational inspections and routine maintenance checks on equipment.
  • Identify and report mechanical issues, hazards, or unsafe conditions.
  • Work closely with truck operators and supervisors to prioritize road maintenance needs.
  • Follow mine plans, ventilation requirements, and traffic management systems.
  • Maintain proper berms, ditches, and roadway profiles underground.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations, procedures, and environmental standards.
  • Complete required documentation, logs, and reports accurately.
  • Assist with other underground tasks as required by supervisors.
  • Support continuous improvement in initiatives in road maintenance and safety.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience operating graders, preferably in underground mining.
  • Valid equipment operator certification or relevant licenses.
  • Familiarity with underground mining practices, safety standards, and equipment.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge for troubleshooting and minor repairs.
  • Ability to read and interpret mine plans and instructions.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong attention to safety and hazard awareness.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and equipment handling skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making ability in dynamic environments.

Working Conditions

  • Work performed in underground mining environments with confined spaces, low lighting, and varying temperatures.
  • Exposure to dust, noise, and heavy equipment.
  • Rotational shifts, including nights, weekends, and extended hours may be required.

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Strict adherence to all mine safety regulations and PPE requirements.
  • Participation in safety meetings, inspections, and training programs.
  • Commitment to a zero-harm safety culture.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while operating machinery.
  • Good physical fitness to work in underground conditions.
  • Capability to enter/exit equipment safely and perform manual tasks when required.
