Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the Maintenance Training team in achieving and maintaining compliance with site and corporate safety, environmental, and competency development requirements.
  • Ensure all hazards, incidents, and near-miss events are formally reported, investigated in a timely manner, and appropriate corrective actions are implemented.
  • Drive the implementation and maintenance of effective safe systems of work and environmental management practices.
  • Lead initiatives to continuously improve site training systems and processes.
  • Meet or exceed all Safety Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), including Lost Time Injuries (LTIs), Job Safety Observations (JSOs), and audit performance.
  • Promote a strong safety and environmental culture by demonstrating exemplary personal behaviour, leading by example, and encouraging best practices across the workforce.
  • Manage the performance and development of direct reports through coaching, training, regular performance feedback, annual performance reviews, and recognition programs to enhance professional growth and operational efficiency.
  • Review the suitability and effectiveness of training programs and recommend continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Communicate company policies, procedures, and standards to ensure full understanding and compliance.
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and mentoring to trainees, graduates, apprentices, and other employees.
  • Foster effective teamwork by building strong working relationships and communicating effectively with employees at all levels of the organisation.
  • Recognise and adapt to cultural and educational differences when training, assessing, and mentoring maintenance personnel and contractors.
  • Develop, coordinate, implement, and deliver training for local, national, expatriate employees, and contractors in accordance with the annual Site Training Plan, Training Needs Analysis (TNA), and approved training schedules. Coordinate vendor-led training as required.
  • Ensure workforce development plans are in place to provide SMCL with a competent and skilled workforce that supports future operational requirements and localisation objectives, in compliance with SMCL standards and Tanzanian legislation.
  • Assist in the preparation, administration, and monitoring of the annual training budget as part of SMCL's Operating and Capital Budget process, ensuring adequate resources are available to support the business plan.
  • Liaise with departmental managers, supervisors, and contractors to identify current and future training requirements.
  • Support supervisors and trainers in developing, implementing, and evaluating technical and non-technical training programs for all Maintenance employees.

Qualifications

  • Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering, Automotive and Development, or a related discipline.
  • Formal qualification in Training and Assessment, Competency-Based Training, or Instructional Design.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in maintenance operations, training, or workforce development within the mining, heavy industry, or process plant environment.
  • Experience in developing and implementing training programs, competency frameworks, and Training Needs Analyses (TNA).
  • Sound knowledge of maintenance practices related to mobile equipment, fixed plant, or mining operations.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, mentoring, and people management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and Learning Management Systems (LMS).
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, report writing, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Valid driving licence.
