Job Description

Requisition ID:  3289

Department:  Tourism and Hospitality

Work Type:  On the road

Application Close Date:  25th January 2026

At Intrepid Travel we exist to inspire, create, share and lead the best travel experiences ever – for both people and the planet. More than 34 years later, we’re proud to be a certified B Corp with hundreds of trips in over 100 countries.

We are Intrepid

The world needs more Intrepid people:

Do you dream of inspiring travellers and helping them fall in love with their destination by immersing them in your local culture and exposing them to real life experiences? Being a Tour Leader with Intrepid, you will do just that!

Every day will be different, but every day you will:

  • Deliver outstanding customer service and bring each itinerary to life — from wildlife encounters and scenic drives to cultural experiences and time spent with local communities, you’ll create moments our travellers will never forget
  • Ensure the health, safety and overall wellbeing of your travellers at all times, remaining calm, professional and solutions-focused when challenges arise
  • Lead and manage trips in line with Intrepid DMC standards, following the itinerary, managing group logistics and fulfilling all required administrative duties
  • Be the main point of contact for travellers throughout the trip, building strong rapport with people from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds
  • Manage trip budgets responsibly, including handling and accounting for cash and expenses
  • Share your passion for travel, Tanzania and Intrepid’s style of responsible, immersive adventures

To be considered you must have:

  • Diploma in Tour Guiding and Operations
  • Level 2 Senior First Aid Certificate (must be completed prior to commencement)
  • Experience leading and engaging diverse groups, with excellent English communication skills
  • Passion for Intrepid-style travel, with relevant guiding or travel experience
  • Strong customer service, leadership, and independent decision-making skills
  • Excellent organisational and problem-solving abilities
  • Experience managing budgets and handling cash
  • Basic computer skills, including email, Word and Excel
  • Physical fitness and resilience for long, challenging working conditions
  • Positive, flexible attitude with a good sense of humour
  • Travel industry experience, accredited training, or local language skills considered an advantage

What you need to know:

  • This is a freelance agreement role. This role offers flexibility in how you work, but requires strong availability during peak travel seasons in East Africa. These periods typically coincide with local holidays and the best times for safaris and wildlife viewing.
  • We are recruiting leaders now, with training and onboarding scheduled for March/April 2026
  • This role can be demanding at times, with long days and varied conditions, so mental resilience and physical fitness are important.
  • You’ll need to be comfortable spending time away from home, as leaders often travel for extended periods and some tours can run for up to four weeks
  • You’ll be leading trips across Tanzania, sharing the country’s landscapes, wildlife and cultures with travellers from around the world. You can view example itineraries at: www.intrepidtravel.com

Our people reflect the diversity of our customers and the communities we visit:

Intrepid is made up of 71 nationalities in over 30 countries, and we recognise that diversity makes us a stronger business. We support a culture where people can be themselves and encourage applications from people of all backgrounds. Including First Nations People, LGBTQI+ people, those living with a disability, or from disadvantaged backgrounds, and all people from different ethnicities, races, and religions.

For our Tour Leaders, the work perks may vary from country to country, but some of the work perks we offer include:

  • Diverse departures through the year to lead!  Including hiking or biking adventures, festival, family, premium and foodie trips
  • Travel to where the trip starts (and home again) is included and covered by us
  • Some meals and all accommodation included (often where the guests are staying, such as hotels, camping, homestays etc)
  • Access to learning and development programs, e-learning and comprehensive tour leader training before you even start
  • Internal career opportunities to further your your career in travel and beyond
  • Amazing travel discounts for you to experience Intrepid as a passenger
  • Recognition and celebration with awards nights and the chance for our top performers to travel to our yearly Global Summit!
  • Opportunity to support not-for-profit Intrepid Foundations projects

We are Real. Together. Ambitious. Impactful. These are our values and to us they're more than just words, they are the pillars of our success and every day it's our people and the work they do that bring them to life.

We aim to ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion stay part of our recruitment process. If you require any reasonable adjustment to participate in the recruitment process, please contact us at [email protected] with your name, location, and the adjustments you require, we will then be in touch to support your application.
